Started an edge AI resource-collection pilot at JR Hachioji Station

Idein Inc., together with JR East Startup Co., Ltd. and ECOMMIT, Inc., started a pilot programme using edge AI for resource collection at the Midori-no-Madoguchi ticket office of JR Hachioji Station on Wednesday 23 April 2025.

Idein’s edge-AI camera “ai cast” was installed on the collection boxes of the resource-circulation service “PASSTO”, providing a collection service for clothing and household goods. Usage-trend data captured by the AI camera is anonymised and analysed, and the resulting CO2 reduction is visualised and shared with the local community via signage inside the station.

Planned events

  • Special-item collection event: collecting items such as tableware, cookware and small appliances that cannot normally be dropped into a PASSTO box.
  • Flea market: a flea market planned around items collected at JR Hachioji Station.

Technical features and privacy

The AI camera processes captured images and video in real time inside the camera itself; the data is discarded immediately after processing and is never stored.

Purpose of the data

  • Aggregating and sharing the number of people using the collection service
  • Improving the service and developing new products
  • Verifying use cases for planning clothing products
